Chilia lui Daniil Sihastrul

Location: Suceava County.
Abstract: Sf. Daniil Sihastru de la Voroneţ (Saint Daniel the Hermit of Voronet) was a 15th century monk and the spiritual father of Ştefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), voivode of Moldavia. He died in 1496. He was officially glorified (became a saint) in the Romanian Orthodox church in 1992.
Daniel was baptized with the name Dumitru, but took the name David when he entered the monastery at Rădăuţi (Radauti). Although he strictly followed the monastic life, he eventually wished to lead a truly holy life far away from the tempations of the world. He moved to the Saint Laurence Skete and changed his name to Daniil (Daniel).
Later Daniil lived alone for 14 years in a small cell (Chilia Sf. Daniil Sihastrul) carved from a huge boulder in a forested valley near the present-day Putna monastery. His small room is now occasionally used as a chapel. At Daniil's urging, Ştefan cel Mare built Putna monastery near the site of his rock cell.
After the death of Orthodox Metropolitan Teoctist in 1478, Daniil left Putna and carved himself a new cell in a cliff near the river Voroneţ (Voronet). In 1488 Ştefan cel Mare commissioned another monastery, Voroneţ, near his new cave. Daniil was buried at Voroneţ monastery.
