Neamţ Monastery
judetul Suceava
Location: Vânători commune, Suceava County.
Abstract: Mănăstirea Neamţ is a monastery for monks (mănăstire de călugări) founded in the 14th century by Petru I Muşat. The steeple was built in the 15th century by Alexandru cel Bun (Alexander the Good). The larger church was built in 1497 by Ştefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great). The site contains two churches, two chapels, a museum, and a library. It is renowned for its resident calligraphers, chroniclers, and printers.
Interestingly, in Romanian Neamţ means German (as does the Romanian word "german," uncapitalized as is common in Romanian when referring to nationalities). Also the Neamţ monastery is not in Neamţ county, where you might expect it to be, but in Suceava county.
Dedication: 40 days after Easter ("Lord's Ascension" day).
