Suceviţa Convent
judetul Suceava
Location: Suceava commune, Suceava County.
Abstract: Mănăstirea Suceviţa is a convent for nuns (mănăstire de maici) founded in 1856 by the Movilescu family, including Metropolitan Bishop Gheorghe Movilă and his brothers. It is the last church in Bucovina to be painted on the front sides and has the greatest number of religious images in the country. The interior and exterior paintings belong to the masterful brush of Ioan Zugravul and his brother Sofronie, both of Moldavia.
The interior paintings illustrate several scenes from Genesis and of the life of Moses. The exterior paintings on the north side illustrate Saint John Climacus's Ladder of Divine Ascent.
The monastery's museum has one of the largest and most precious collections of medieaval art in Moldavia, including: the epitaph with 10,000 pearls; the silver casket with Lady Elisabeta's hair; and the tomb covers of Voivodes Ieremia and Simion Movilă.
Dedication: Easter ("Lord's Ascension" day).
