Voroneţ Convent
judetul Suceava

Location: Voroneţ village, Suceava County.

Abstract: Mănăstirea Voroneţ is a convent for nuns (mănăstire de maici) founded in 1488 by Ştefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great). The monastery is regarded as "the Sistine Chapel of the Orient." The interior paintings date from the reign of Stephen the Great (1457-1504). The exterior paintings date from the reign of Petru Rareş (1534-1535).

The monastery's paintings (interior and exterior) are characterized by a special color that is internationally recognized by artists as "Voroneţ Blue."

This is the monastery that I most wanted to visit, having read so much about it prior to my vacation. Sadly, I was a little disappointed by the condition of the exterior walls, which showed the inevitable signs of the onslaught of the weather. I bought a postcard just so I could see Voronet Blue the way it once was. Still, even with the faded paint, it was an impressive monastery.

Dedication: 29 April ("St. George" day).
