Băile Tuşnad
judetul Harghita
From Sfântu Gheorghe (St. George), you drive across the spectacular Tuşnad (Tusnad) Pass to arrive in the spa town of Băile Tuşnad (Baile Tusnad; Tusnádfürdó in Hungarian), on the western shores of Lacul Sfânta Ana (Lake St. Anne). Lake St. Anne, which lies inside a volcanic crater on Mount Ciumatu (950m), is steeped in Hungarian legend.
Since the 12th century, Székely (Szekely, or Hungarian) pilgrims have flocked here each year on 26 July to pay homage to St. Anne, the traditional protector of young women. Székely women unable to conceive also come here to pray for a child.
The hot springs in Băile Tuşnad, on Lacul Sfânta Ana's western shores, attract many tourists. Băile Tuşnad actually means Tusnad Spa.
Unfortunately, I arrived in Băile Tuşnad when it was time to eat and find a place to stay for the night, so I wasn't quite as interested in taking photos as I should have been.
