Şumuleu-Ciuc
judetul Harghita

When we parked the car in the city and asked for directions to the church, the people said it was just a short walk. So we decided to walk instead of drive. It was muggy and hot, but supposedly a short walk. Big mistake!

After an hour and a half in the blazing hot sun (from which I got a sunburn that lasted several days), we finally arrived at the church. I sat in the shade of a tree and caught my breath. They didn't let us take pictures inside the church, so all I got was a couple of photos of the outside.

But it was just too stifling HOT for me to feel like taking any more pictures as we trudged back to our parked car. I learned a valuable lesson. Never believe a Romanian who says it's just a short walk! It seems that anything less than a full day's walk is a "short" walk.

The Franciscan church of Şumuleu-Ciuc, a registered historic landmark, is one of the most famous architectural monuments in Transylvania, being a well-known pilgrimage destination. Some future day, I hope to return to take some photos ... but this time, I'll drive instead of taking a short walk.
