Turda
judetul Cluj
Turda, 27 km southeast of Cluj-Napoca (my least favorite city in all of Romania ... not sure why), was the seat of the Transylvanian Diet in the mid-16th century and, therefore, once one of the richest towns in the region.
Historically, Turda was famous for its salt mines, which began operation way back in 1271. Following their closure in 1932, the abandoned mines were used to store cheese for the region. Today, a portion of the salt mines serve as a day center for people suffering from lung and bronchial diseases, since the mines maintain a constant 10° C temperature.
In 1997 Turda made national headlines as hundreds of black crows attacked the town and the people in it. It was like something out of an old Alfred Hitchcock movie.
I don't really have any exciting photos of this small town. We arrived at about lunchtime and I had seen a sign beside the road about a restaurant at the Hotel Dracula. I thought it would be nice to eat there, even though I'm definitely NOT one of the Dracula fans. So I took a couple of photos of the hotel grounds. If you were expecting photos of the city itself, you'll be disappointed.
